Facebook Pay is being rebranded as Meta Pay
The company is trying to solve the problem of interaction of transactions and values in cyberspace. It announced the launch of a new digital wallet that will support the user economy in the upcoming iteration of the metaverse. The wallet, called Meta Pay, will be an evolution of what is known today as Facebook Pay, while still supporting a range of payments currently processed, but with a new focus on digital identity and proof of ownership.
According to Meta CEO (formerly of Facebook) Mark Zuckerberg, Meta Pay will be a solution to two problems in virtual reality: access to digital goods and proof of ownership. To this he states:
“In the future, there will be all kinds of digital items you can search to create or buy – digital clothing, art, videos, music, experiences, virtual events and more. Proof of ownership will be important, especially if you want to take some of these items with you on different services.“

Portability and standardization in the Metaverse
The ingenious creator suggested that ideally anything purchased in one part of the digital world should be available on another platform, with the same features and characteristics. This is one of the goals Meta aims to achieve with Meta Pay: a kind of Web3 identity that connects purchases of digital items with a unique virtual personality. Zuckerberg says:
“This kind of interoperability will provide a much better experience for people and a greater amount for creators. That is, the more places you can easily use your digital goods, the more you can price them, which creates a bigger market for founders.“
Additionally, the developer claims that a universal payment method across the metaverse will be a huge opportunity for content developers, as more users will be able to purchase the merchandise offered to them. This can only be achieved with some degree of standardization.
Recall that the company recently partnered with Microsoft and other companies like Epic Games to start an open standards group on the metaverse. The main goal of the experts is to improve it, making it more operational for the future.
