Apple has given its most direct confirmation that it will use a USB Type-C port in its smartphones after the EU passed a new law in this direction. The company’s marketing chief, Greg Joswiak, said in response to an inquiry that apparently Apple has no choice and will have to comply with the law.

In a subsequent response, he shared that the introduction depends on the requirements, which indicate that this could happen in the fall of 2024. Joswiak did not respond to an inquiry about whether devices sold outside the EU will also have such a connector.

It is obvious that Apple is not happy about this development. Traditionally, the company prefers to use technologies of its own development instead of applying external standards. Joswiak also says that the availability of chargers with detachable cables has largely solved the standardization issues.

According to him, the switch from Lightning to USB Type-C will lead to more e-waste.
